The community of Sioux City is mourning the passing of Cory Michael “Moose” Mozak, age 41, who died on May 23, 2026. His sudden passing has left family, friends, former teammates, and many in the Siouxland area reflecting on a life marked by deep love for family, hockey, and community.
Born on September 28, 1984, in Sioux City, Iowa, Cory was the son of Jeanne (Hansen) and Tim Mozak. From an early age, he developed a strong passion for hockey, attending East High School before going on to play junior hockey in Helena, Montana. He later continued his athletic journey at the University of Wisconsin–Stout, where he also played hockey and built lifelong friendships through the sport he loved.
After returning home to Sioux City, Cory remained closely connected to the hockey community, giving back through coaching with Siouxland Youth Hockey and the Sioux City Metros alongside his brothers. His dedication to mentoring young athletes reflected his commitment not only to the game but to helping others grow in confidence, discipline, and teamwork.
Cory later worked at Mozak’s Furniture & Flooring, the family business, before continuing his professional career with Shaw Industries, a role that eventually brought him and his family to St. Louis. Throughout his career and life transitions, he remained deeply grounded in his relationships and his role as a devoted father.
Above all, Cory’s greatest pride and joy were his children—Kennedey, Kerrigan, and Collin Mozak. Family members describe him as a loving and present father whose life revolved around his kids and their happiness. His bond with them was central to who he was, and his legacy lives strongly through them.
Those who knew Cory remember him as charismatic, energetic, and full of life. He had a larger-than-life personality, an easy charm, and a natural ability to make people feel welcome and valued. Friends and loved ones recall how he could light up any room he entered, forming connections effortlessly and leaving lasting impressions on everyone he met.
He is survived by his children, parents, siblings, extended family, and many friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by several grandparents and a beloved uncle.
Cory Mozak’s family hopes he will be remembered most for his laughter, his generosity of spirit, and the love he gave so freely. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
